Collective names for air and water creatures

It’s been days since my last post here. Uh oh. Sorry for that. Research stuff.

As you may have noticed, most of the previous posts were about COVID-19 virus. While it is a “worldwide issue” (and definitely an important one), maybe we can chill out a bit about the issue (not neglecting though, just trying to calm ourselves). What do you think? 🙂 So today, I thought of having Trivia of the Day to lighten up the everyone’s mood while learning something.

Okay.. Let us start! 🙂

Have you heard of collective names for animals? It is a term used to refer a group of any kind of animals. I am sure you do. What inspired me of writing this post is the Netflix show Absurd Planet. I seriously recommend this show. You will laugh hard while learning. It’s an awesome show and I think it is meant for general audiences. Anyway, I am sure you are familiar with few of what I will be sharing here.

Who will not be familiar with the school of fish. I’m pretty sure you have heard this from Spongebob, Finding Nemo and all other animated underwater adventures. 🙂

If you see a group of fishes crossing the ocean, that’s how you call them — School of Fish. But but but… Another trivia here. If a group of fishes just literally come together in an interactive way, say all fishes are doing their own businesses (e.g., eating, playing (if they play)), they are described as SHOALING FISHES. But, if they swim in ONE DIRECTION, they are called as School of fishes or described as SCHOOLING FISHES. Pretty interesting right? 🙂

Next, do you know how to call a group of clams?

(Okay, yes, they are clams.. not some peeking alligators hahah!)

A group of clams is called BED OF CLAMS. Why do you think it is called a Bed? Probably because they literally look like a bed (a comfy mattress inside a shell). Take a look at it again. Or maybe before you prepare your clam chowder, see if the inside looks comfy :D. Or maybe, they are called as bed of clams because they tend to cluster together, making it appear like a great habitat for their preys and BOOM! Captured! Well, well, now we know.. Bed of Clams.

I’m sure you know the next one. A group of birds is called FLOCK OF BIRDS.

Birds gather together during migration and because of security reasons. Remember, you feel much stronger when you are in a group. Once the enemy comes in, all the birds in that flock protect each other. You may also notice that most of the birds in a flock are of the same species – meaning, they are from the same ancestry. But it is also common to see a flock of birds belonging to different species. The only disadvantage would be, an increase in predation. Each kind of bird may have its own enemy. So if all these predators see them happily flying in the skies, then it’s gonna be a problem.

This one is another interesting group of underwater creatures. How do you call a group of jellyfishes?

It’s a SMACK! The cutest collective term I have heard so far. But yeah, most scientists call them BLOOM. 🙂

The next one is another level of collective term. A group of stingrays is called as FEVER OF STINGRAYS. Yeah, you read it right. FEVER.

The first time I read about it, I suddenly imagined a group of metallic band performers. hahaha! I don’t know why. It got me the feels of it. They are called fever, probably because these group of dangerous creatures sting. Yeah, and it could be very lethal. One more thing. They are relatives of the sharks as well.

Next, we have the gentle looking dolphins. We call the group of dolphins as POD OF DOLPHINS.

Yes, yes. Those cute and friendly-looking dolphins are called as Pod. Dolphins are social mammals that swim together, protect each other and find food together. Everything is done together. Isn’t it sweet. Teamwork it is! 🙂

Lastly, we have the group of falcons. And we call them as CAST OF FALCONS.

Okay, these are just heads. Ahmm.. so sorry. They’re a bit shy to show their masculine bodies 😀 Kidding! it’s just so difficult to make cute bodies of falcons so I just decided to draw their heads instead. 😀 So yeah, they are called as a cast. If you search for this (type cast of falcons), you’ll end up searching the novel entitled “A Cast of Falcons”. Try it. 😀

Alright, before I end this post, I wanna share a nerdy joke. Please give me a chance. haha!

What do you call a group of dolphins and a group of falcons together as one big group?

It is called a…………………. (don’t unfollow me after reading this pleaseeee)….. a PODCAST!!!! Yay!! Hahaha! Admit it, you laughed. Or maybe a bit. Or just smiled. Yeah. That’s good. Keep smiling. hahaha!
